    Sweet Baby Jesus, Why am I Awake?
    Sometimes, I hate my body.

    Not generally. I mean, as the years have progressed it has actually generally improved. I don't get sick or as sick as I used to, my allergies have decreased (though some days are definitely better than others), and I don't have random aches and pains that make life miserable. Good eye sight, decent hearing, things are generally ok.

    Except for when I hate my body like tonight.

    I don't know what it is, maybe it was all of those nights as a teenager staying up until day light on the newly born and forming Internet, but my body will not let me sleep if I try to go to bed any earlier than 10:30 most nights. Unless I'm ill or totally exhausted, going to sleep any earlier than 10:30, even if I'm tired, means waking up about two and a half hours later. I don't wake up bright-eyed and bushy-tailed by any stretch but I definitely can't fall back to sleep for hours. Joy.

    There's also sleeping when it's hot. My body temperature is generally about 99.6 (once in high school I decided to check my body temperature over ten days) and when I sleep it feels like it goes up. Add in hot nights (for some reason our bed room was sweltering tonight) and I tend to overheat during the night. This leads to really weird dreams and this odd sleep-state where it feels like I'm drowning with wakefulness, unable to comfortably pass back out and slip into deeper dream sleep. It really sucks.

    Tonight I got both.

    That's why I'm up, blogging, at 1:15 in the morning. Fun.

    First attempt
    It's been a long weekend. Got in just a little while ago and went right to playing with the modeling clay.

    My first attempt at modeling anything from scratch )

    Visited family today and yesterday. Hung out with my sister a lot and had a lot of fun. We went and saw the Will Smith movie "Handcock". It was fun. There are problems with the story and plot but it had some good laughs and didn't take itself to seriously which helped to smooth over the bumps. I would recommend it for rental more than the theater though.

    Tomorrow's a big day. I have a lot of work ahead of me what with all the projects going on. I plan to get some work done with Illustrator, the painting commissions, the dollies and some time on Guitar Hero. Right now? I'm going to work upon the masks for the commissioned pieces. Those and the Chibi characters are my priorities this next week.

    July 4th
    Yay fireworks! This morning I am covered in ash and sand and beach air film. Unfortunately, we didn't make it to Nona's, since we were done and they let the crew go *after* the 7pm closure of the beach section of highway 1. Sadness. (Though we did get amazing surplus picnic food from a bunch of RV campers - seriously the platonic ideal of potato salad, and an amazing fresh sweet corn and caprese salad. Nom nom nom.) Fireworks went off without any major issues, though the fog rolled in as we were completing the build. Some really really spectacular new effect product! The cubes make me giggle like a dork. We raced the tide during breakdown, and still had the move the truck twice. I think we'll all be sore today.

    Also, it was my dad's first pyro shoot. :D Doing pyro with my dad, and Noah = awesome.

    And now, I peel myself out of Belmont House (getting in at 1am does not make for a safe trip back over 17), shower, and pack for the Emerald City Ball.

    Life is exciting. I will not think about work. I will not think about work.

    Tuesday, I went in to see my general physician to be cleared for surgery. She asked me when my last tetanus shot was, but I couldn't remember.
    Apparently my Ortho is planning on operating with rusty equipment, because they gave me a tet shot right then and there.
    And let me just tell you... Tet shots HURT!

    Also, saw Hancock yesterday. Loved it and highly recommend it.

    ok. Back to waiting in oetho's office with nothing to read...

    Ren's Reviews: The (Not) Happening
    Ok, so this is probably going to be more of a rant than a review considering the fact that I've yet to see The Happening, although I think I've picked up a pretty good understanding of the movie from reading many reviews and write-ups of it. Maybe this can be a new form of sarcastic "meta-review", a snark-filled review without the pain of having paid money to see a bad film.

    Why does Hollywood continue to give money to M. Night Shyamalan and allow him to make movies? Seriously.

    Sure Sixth Sense was good and was the first real introduction to his now cliché twist-ending and I really enjoyed Unbreakable as an interesting take on the idea of the comic book hero and modern mythology. Signs had some good, creepy/scary/suspenseful moments but it suffered from the level of preaching in it. The Village had a ton of potential but the hook was obvious from about a third of the movie in and, really, having the village idiot be the real bad guy of the movie was poor. The Lady in the Water was boring, boring in a way that made my soul hurt, and even the mythology that he came up with for the movie was boring; the monster being a topiary animal from hell was, also, incredibly lame.

    His movies' successes have slowly been dwindling, collapsing under further improbable plots and the fact that his movie making style changes not one bit (every film of his has the close-up "STARE INTO THE ACTOR'S FACE WHILE THEY EMOTE! WATCH THE EMOTE!" shots and the pregnant pauses where you can actually hear the actors acting out the ellipsis in the script). The arrogant disdain with which he holds for most of Hollywood is so apparent that I'm surprised the secret masters of the movie industry haven't put all of his projects in pre-production limbo.

    So now we have The Happening, which from all accounts didn't.

    Fun times Saturday

    Hey folks who play City of Heroes/Villains:

    Myself and a couple folks are making a day of it, all LAN party style and everything.  If you've got a Villain on Virtue, or want to test making a Villain, now's the time.  We've got a couple folks crowding it up at my place, and I look forward to seeing folks online.  I'm easily found online by my global handle @Voxfire.

    Ren's Reviews: SKADOOSH! (Kung-Fu Panda)
    Normally, I do not like Jack Black.

    Now, I haven't seen him in many movies but his kind of humor (i.e. stupid) isn't my usual cup of tea for the same reason I think that 95% of South Park and just about every Jim Carrey movie is an utter waste of time.

    With that being said: I fucking loved this movie.

    The animation is superb in that it flows extremely well. Settings, dialogue, and character movements are all really well done and the fight scenes are amazing. The story is corny but, what do you want, it's a movie about a panda that learns kung fu.

    While he brought some of us usual energy to the project, Jack Black seemed to be restrained but in a "less is more" sort of way. For once I found that there was no part of his performance, such as it is, that I had any kind of issue with.

    This was a thoroughly enjoyable movie and I'd recommend seeing it in a theater, even if you have to pay full price.

    Life, it is the SUCK!
    So I have be conversing with Andrew about wedding stresses and things are changing in regards to the actual planned date... and today we received notice that we have to move out by August 30 as the owner's son has bought the property and is moving in.

    We might have a new place but right now we need to check with our property managers.

    PRAY please.

    And the wedding is on hold until we figure this out.

    Help me analyze a decision
    Yes, I admit I'm too lazy to work this out on my own.  However, I add the caveat that I am also too ignorant (don't really know how) and possibly stupid (not sure I'll ever understand it).

    It's NLHE.  One opponent and the river card just fell.  The pot is big in relation to the stacks.  Lets say it is $164.  The board is Kc Qc Tc Jd 6s.  You are holding AcJd.  Your opponent bet the flop hard and you called.  You checked the turn and he checked behind you.  You checked the river and he bets all in for another $70. 

    You know that if he has any two clubs you are beat.  If he has any ace, you are splitting it.  If he holds any other hand, you win. 

    How do you calculate the different combinations of hands that beat you, split with you, and that you beat?  What do you do with the numbers at that point to decide if you should call or not?  Does the odd betting pattern on the flop-turn-river influence your decision?  If so, how?
